Sri Guru Granth Sahib: A Universal Scripture for Mankind

by Harminder Kaur , Vijay N. Shankar

The year 2004 marked the 400th anniversary of the installation of the Adi Granth at the Darbar Sahib in the Amritsar. It was the culmination of a spiritual tradition set in motion by Guru Nanak Dev himself as he roamed far and wide, singing hymns composed in praise of the One Reality (IKK) Onkar that he held to be the Supreme Being. It was in 1708 that the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh, gave to the Sikhs the Guru Granth Sahib as the Living Guru for all Time with the injunction: "All Sikhs are given the command, own the Granth as your Guru." In this commemorative beautifully illustrated pictorial work it's not only to trace the composition and then the compilation of the sacred hymns, but it also evokes the great spiritual energy that comes from them.
